We are the BC provincial resource for people living with lymphedema (LE), a non-curable, disfiguring condition that causes areas of the body to swell due to a damaged lymphatic system. We offer awareness, advocacy, education, and support. This logo could become the 'brand' for LE beyond BC (Canada, North America, worldwide), just as the pink ribbon is for breast cancer,
We are unique
We are unique as the only visible resource in our province for lymphedema (LE). We have only been in the public eye for over a year. There is no competition. The condition itself is unique. It is unique within medical care as it is an 'orphan' condition - no particular area claims it under their area of care. Little attention has been paid to advancement of care or a cure. People with the condition feel unique, but in a bad way - freakish - often feeling isolated, unsure of where to turn for help, confused about the best route for their care, and carry a heavy financial burden as few avenues of care are covered by medical insurance.

Target Audience
The main target audience is anybody with an interest in lymphedema (LE) - those living with the condition, their families, and friends; healthcare professionals; suppliers of products/services; and other LE organizations worldwide. A high percentage of patients are middle-aged/elderly women, but it can affect either gender and any age. Secondarily, we want to create public awareness. That's why the right logo (like the breast cancer pink ribbon) could end up being recognizable worldwide. We want our logo to be pleasing to those we will approach for funding through grants or sponsorship, so we want to look professional/reputable.
What our logo should communicate
What lymphedema (LE) is about - possibly showing the lymphatic system in some way or how the condition manifests with swollen limbs. The lymph system is a network and our Association is part of a network of organizations committed to helping people living with LE. Connection is another key word as the lymph system is a connected body system and we are connecting people living with LE with education and resources to help them care for their condition. Some other key descriptive words are professionalism, support, and education. A browse of the internet looking at images of LE and viewing other LE organization's websites will give you an idea of what is already out there and what the condition is about.

We want this in our logo
One woman in the USA decided to use the butterfly and the colour teal to represent lymphedema (LE) when she designed a pin for fundraising and awareness purposes. The organizations that came into being after that followed suit. We are not particularly fond of the butterfly as it denotes metamorphosis, and although people with lymphedema do 'morph', they don't morph into something beautiful, they morph into something disfiguring that isolates them. The butterfly is also a feminine image and although a large number of lymphedema sufferers are women, it is not just a 'female' condition. The butterfly is also used for many other things in the marketplace and probably would never be able to be noticed as a particular brand. That being said, there is an argument to stay in keeping with the rest of the North America community that have followed this lead. Also, teal is now the colour used by Ovarian Cancer in Canada.
A few new organizations have incorporated a diagram of the lymphatic system in their promotional materials, though it's not really a 'logo' in the true sense of the word. Perhaps if there was a way to show large limbs in comparison to normal limbs (eg: large leg and opposite side large arm).
Another option would be to think about 'flow' in some way. LE is caused by a lack of flow in the lymphatics. Our newsletter is called IN THE FLOW at this time, though we don't have to be 'married' to it.
Additional comments for the designers
We really loved the colours that the Vancouver Olympics had - hues of blue with green, using white and gold in small accents. These colours also depict the ocean and forest of which BC is kind of known for. Curved lines rather than straight.could also give that feeling of flow/water.

Abstract Mark
Abstract marks use a single shape or symbol to represent a brand or product. Their genius is their
simplicity as customers recognize abstract logos at a single glance.
Emblem
An emblem uses a shape or picture to literally or metaphorically represent a company or brand.
Generally the organization's name will be included in the emblem.
Letterform Mark
A letterform mark typically uses 1 to 3 letters from the business name to represent the
